Spring driving tips

Now that winter is behind us it’s time to brush the cobwebs off your car, get the sunglasses out of storage and make sure your vehicle is ready for the months ahead. After the last few months of frosty roads, spring brings a whole new set of challenges when it comes to driving. From having a spring clean to anticipating increased popularity on country roads, we have got a few tips which will mean that you are ready for the season, and can enjoy the improved weather whilst remaining safe.

1.Have a spring clean

Get truly into the spring of things and have a good clean out in your car. After the long winter months we can often grow neglectful of maintaining our cars, and spring is the perfect time to remedy that. Even if you have kept your car in prime condition over the last few months, it is always good idea to check the hard to reach areas you may normally miss, such as under the car.

2. Be aware of people and animals on the road

As soon as the weather starts getting better, people and animals take to the roads in swarms. Wild animals come out of hibernation and become more active, and when the weather is sunny, almost everyone will be out walking in the countryside or off to the beach. When driving in the spring, anticipate the horse riders, country walkers and wild animals and make sure you drive carefully.

3. Prepare for British weather

We all know that British weather is sporadic at the best of times. In one minute the sky may be cloudless and sunny, the next, you are facing heavy rain or hail. Make sure you acknowledge this and react to the changing weather. When roads are wet, make sure you drive slower to avoid slipping and coping with the decreased visibility. Alternatively, a good pair of sunglasses will keep you covered when the sun is at its brightest.

4. Check your car

After you have finished cleaning your car, make sure you do a thorough check of the oil and water and make sure that everything is in full working order. Now is the perfect time to check lights and tyre pressure and replace them if necessary, particularly if you are planning long drives in the future. In reaction to the traditionally heavy rainfall, check window wipers and replace them if they are in bad condition – you may have to use them a lot. If you are a driver who leaves their car unused throughout much of the winter months then these checks are doubly important. If you want to take extra precuations, take your car out for a test run just to make sure everything is in perfect condition.
